What Is Spam
Spam is the term used to describe unwanted direct-marketing emails. It is most
commonly distributed as bulk email campaigns. One should note, however, that
not all bulk emails are spam. Many websites offer newsletters and email lists
on an opt-in basis, meaning that the recipient first agrees to receive their
email before the company sends anything to the persons mailbox. These opt-in
services always have a hassle-free way to opt-out and usually offer information
or discounts that the subscriber wants.
Sending unsolicited email to online customers who have not elected to receive
information is considered spam. Spammers collect email addresses from various
sources, including newsgroups and chat rooms. Sometimes businesses will sell
their email lists to spammers for a profit. Spam is always unwanted and
unsolicited, and is sometimes offensive or sexual in nature.
