Uploading My Site
World Wide Web home pages are normally loaded using the File Transfer
Protocol ( FTP ). There are numerous ftp client software packages
available for the PC and Macintosh. In addition, a number of Web
development packages now include ftp capability to assist you in
uploading your homepage.
We have included specific instructions for using several popular
FTP programs for both the PC and Macintosh. However, if you have
some other type of FTP software, we have included general FTP upload
instructions below:
General FTP Upload Instructions
1) Open a connection to www.yourdomain.com.
2) Login with your userid and password. Do not use the anonymous login.
3) Upload your webpage files to the /www subdirectory.
Hints: a) If your ftp client does not support auto detection
of binary ( ex. graphics ) files, you will need to explicitly
switch to binary mode prior to uploading.. which is recommended anyway.
The page you wish people visiting your site to see first,
must be named index.html which must be typed
in lower-case letters only. This is the placeholder file
for your homepage. When people navigate to your homepage
they will be automatically directed to this page first. If
you forget to do this, visitors to your page will see the
message telling them that access to your site is forbidden.
Note. You can change or add to your web page at any time 24/7.
