How Spam Works
Companies who rely on spam emails for their marketing tactics rarely send the
emails themselves. Spam is usually sent by a third-party “spammer”: a company
in the business of distributing unsolicited email. Spammers have many ways of
finding your email address, including harvesting addresses from websites and
newsgroups. A spammer can also buy email addresses very cheaply. A spammer can
buy 15 million email addresses for as little as $129!
The cost of sending spam is virtually nothing. A company could spam 10,000
people for under $100, while sending postal mailings to those same people would
cost them several thousand dollars. Spamming, then, becomes very attractive to
some businesses. A company can send their message to thousands of “potential
customers” for a penny each! Until real laws and regulations are in place,
spam is seen as a good marketing tool for many businesses, and is here to stay.
